この引用元は,Conversations with John Searle, Libros En Red, 2001, p.104 です.

G.F.:
When you distinguish between conditions of performance and conditions of satisfaction, I understand that the /conditions of performance/ are what Austiin called felicity conditions. Are you not using the term felicity conditions anymore?
John Searle:
I was never happy with that term because it fails to distinguish between conditions which are necessary for the performance of the act at all, and conditions were[sic] are necessary for the performance of the act in a non-defective style. I can make a statement to you that is defective in that it is insincere, but it's still a statement.

G.F.(インタビュアー):

I make the distinction between conditions on the successful performance and conditions on the non-defective performance. A performance can be defective and still be a successful performance. Now that's a kind of ugly terminology, but the idea is that Austin's felicity conditions gloss over that distinction. So I can't make an assertion to you without committing myself to the truth in the proposition. That's the essential condition. But, of course, having done that, I can make all kinds of defective assertions - if I'm lying, or I don't have enough evidence, I'm not in a position to say the things that I'm saying. And those will be infelicitous, but the utterance is still a case of my making an assertion.
Austin's notion of felicity conditions disguises the distinction between those that are essential for the performance of the act at all, and those that just have to do with whether or not the act was performed in a non-defective way. And I want to make that distinction explicit.
